요즘 근황은 어떠한가

좋은 프로젝트 몇몇을 진행하며 전체적으로 바쁜 한 해를 보냈다. 여름 동안은 이탈리아에 가서 내가 정기적으로 함께 일하는 꼬라이니 출판사의 프로젝트를 작업했다. COOP의 작업을 설명하는 프로젝트로, COOP은 지난 30년 간 어린이를 위한 많은 인터랙티브 워크숍들을 제공하며 학교와 함께 광범위하게 일해왔다. 이는 어린 소비자들이 자신이 사고 있는 것에 대해 책임감 있는, 착한 선택을 하도록 도움으로써 ‘의식 있는 소비자’가 되도록 교육하는 데 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 현재는 꼬라이니에서 출간될, 바다를 주제로 하는 책을 작업하고 있다. 또한 처음으로 내 책이 한국에서 출간될 예정인데, 이탈리아의 출판사 Topipittori에서 출간되었던 『Our Colour book』이 바로 그 책이다.

Could you tell me about your recent life?

I’ve had a generally busy year, with some nice projects. Over the summer I went to Italy to work on a project with Edizioni Corraini, an Italian publisher I work with regularly. The project explains the work of the COOP, who for the last 30 years have worked extensively with schools, providing many interactive workshops for children. These focus on educating young consumers to help them make good, responsible choices about what they are buying, and to become ‘aware consumers‘. I’m now working on a new book for Corraini, on the theme of the sea. Also one of my books: Our Colour book published by Topipittori in Italy has become my first to be published in Korea!

일러스트레이터가 된 계기는 무엇이었나, 어렸을 때부터 그림을 그렸나

그렇다. 나는 아주 예술적이고 창조적인 가정에서 자랐고, 어렸을 때부터 늘 그림을 그렸다. 어머니는 예술 학교에 진학했고 북디자인 분야에서 일하셨는데, 성장할 때 내 그림에 대해 많이 격려해주셨다. 나는 내가 전부 그림을 그린 작은 이야기책들을 만들곤 했었다!

What was your chance to being illustrator? Did you draw from a child?

Yes, I grew up in a very artistic, creative family and was always drawing as a child. My Mum went to art school and worked in book design and she gave me a lot of encouragement with my drawing as I was growing up. I used to create little story books illustrated with my drawings throughout!

현재의 당신이 있는 데 크게 영향을 준 것이 있는지 궁금하다

아마도 나의 집과 가족 생활일 것 같다. 나는 서섹스 주의 시골에 있는 오래된 작은 수도원에서 자랐다. 본래 건물의 일부분만이 남아 있고 최신식으로 개조되고 세월에 변했지만, 여전히 원래의 특징을 많이 간직하고 있었고 아주 특별한 분위기를 지니고 있었다. 당시에는 깨닫지 못했지만 거기에서 성장한 것은 나의 이후 작업과 시각 예술 분야에서 일하기로 한 내 결정에 중요한 영향을 미쳤다. 나는 오래된 책들이 꽂혀져 있는 책장들, 종이들, 그림들, 편지들과 가구, 심지어 오래된 벽화들로 둘러싸인 환경에서 성장했다. 끊임없는 영감의 원천이 내 모든 주변에 있었던 것이다!

Is there something that strongly influences on you, contributing to make you who you are now?

Probably my home and family life. I grew up in an old priory (like a monastery) in the Sussex countryside. Only a small portion of the original building remains and it has been built on to and changed over the years, but it still retains much of it’s original character and has a very special atmosphere. I didn’t realise it at the time, but I think growing up there was an important influence on my subsequent work and decision to work within the visual arts. I grew up surrounded by shelves of old books, papers, pictures, letters and furniture - even some ancient wall paintings - there was a constant source of inspiration all around me!

개인적으로 해리엇 러셀의 그림의 특징이나 정체성은 무엇이라고 생각하는가

내 작업은 종종 ‘별나고(quirky)’ ‘엉뚱하다(whimsical)’는 얘기를 듣는다. 아이디어 역시 매우 중요하다. 나는 나만의 관점을 더하거나 대상을 곁눈질로 바라보며, 사람들이 예상치 않은 관점에서 대상에 대해 접근하고자 노력한다. 이것이 나로서는 작업을 즐겁게 만들며, 동시에 다른 사람들에게는 즐겁게 볼 수 있는 무언가를 주기를 바란다.

In your opinion, what is the characteristic or identity of Harriet Russell’s illustration?

My work is often called ‘quirky’ and ‘whimsical’. Ideas are very important too. I try to come at subjects from an angle you would not expect, adding my own perspective or looking at them with a sideways glance. This makes it fun for me making the work but also hopefully gives other people something they will enjoy looking at.

작업 과정 및 방식에 대해 설명해줄 수 있나, 디지털 매체들 또한 사용하는지 궁금하다

파일롯 펜, 볼펜, 연필, 수채화 등 다양한 매체를 이용하여 모든 것을 손으로 그린다. 그리고 난 후 그 그림을 스캔 받아 포토샵에서 작업을 이어가는데, 만족스러울 때까지 요소들의 위치를 옮기거나 크기를 바꾸거나 한다. 그러고선 또다시 포토샵으로 색깔을 더한다. 때로는 그냥 편평한 색을 쓰지 않고 그림에 깊이와 풍부함을 더해줄 페인팅한 색이나 텍스처들을 스캔 받아 사용하기도 한다.

Could you explain your working process and working methods? Do you use the digital mediums also?

I draw everything by hand in a variety of media, pilot pen, biro, pencil, watercolour etc. I then scan the drawings in and work on them in photoshop, moving things around, re-sizing them etc until I’m happy. Then I add colour, again with Photoshop, sometimes I use scanned in, painted colours or textures to give my images more depth and richness, rather than just using flat colour.

『Sixty Impossible things before Lunch』에서처럼 ‘상상’이 작업의 중요한 점들 중 하나인 것 같다. 어떻게 책을 위한 상상의 아이디어들과 영감을 얻었는가

『Sixty Impossible things before Lunch』는 일부분, 루이스 캐롤의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』와 『거울나라의 앨리스』에서 하얀 여왕이 ‘아침 식사를 먹기 전에 여섯 가지 불가능한 일’을 믿는다고 말한 것으로부터 영감을 얻었다. 나는 잘 알려진 불가능한 질문들과 아이디어들에 대해 생각하는 것부터 시작했다. ‘닭이 먼저냐, 달걀이 먼저냐?’, ‘그걸 누가 알겠니?(How long is a piece of string?)’, ‘우주는 어떻게 생겼을까’. 대부분이 내가 자라면서 호기심을 가졌던 문제들이다. 그리고 나서는 나만의 ‘불가능한 일들’에 대해 생각했다. 만약 벽돌을 심는다면 어떻게 될까, 나무 위의 오두막(treehouse)으로 자라날까? 만약 연필을 심는다면, 나무 그림(drawing of a tree)으로 자라날까?

“Imagination” looks one of the important things in your work, as we can see Sixty Impossible things before Lunch. How do you get the imaginative ideas and inspirations in general?

The idea for Sixty Impossible things before Lunch was partly inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking glass in which the White Queen says she has believed in as many as ‘Six Impossible things before breakfast’. I started off thinking about well known impossible questions and ideas: ‘Which came first, the chicken or the egg?’, ‘How long is a piece of string’, ‘What does the universe look like’. Many are questions that intrigued me as I was growing up. I then went on to think of my own ‘impossibilities’ – what would happen if you planted a brick, would it grow into a treehouse? How about a pencil, would it grow into a drawing of a tree?

작업이 밝고 위트가 있다. 추상적이거나 은유적인 질문일 수도 있는데, 어떻게 스스로 안의 어린아이를 유지해가나

잘은 모르겠지만, 나는 제대로 다 자란 적이 없는 것 같다! 나는 대개 대상을 가벼운 마음으로 보려고 노력하는 편이고, 단어들과 그림들을 가지고 장난하는 걸 좋아한다. 선천적으로 호기심이 많고 질문을 많이 하는 사람이다. 아이들이 그러는 것처럼!

Your works are witty and bright. It would be too abstract and metaphorical question, but how do you keep a child in your mind?

I am not sure – perhaps I have never properly grown up! I usually try and look at things in a lighthearted way and am playful with words and pictures. I am naturally curious and question things, perhaps like a child would!

일러스트레이션이나 다른 예술 작업을 할 때 당신이 가장 중요하게 생각하는 가치는 무엇인가

아이디어가 매우 중요하다. 그 아이디어를 시각적으로 흥미로운 방식으로 소통하는 것도 중요하다. 그리고 가능한 한, 독창적인 것이 중요하다.

What is the most importantly considered value when you do illustration or any other art works?

The idea is very important, the communication of that idea in a visually interesting way, and also as far as possible, originality.
