Please introduce yourself.

I grew up in the countryside in New York State, and studied art and education at the State University College at Buffalo. I taught in public schools for 3 years, then spent some time learning about a career in illustration. I had my first full year as an illustrator in 1980, living in Boston, Massachusetts. At that time, I worked in a very representational style doing advertising illustration for Boston banks, newspapers, and high tech clients. Professional as that was, it wasn't creative on my part, and I didn't know anything about editorial illustration. A big turning point for me happened in 1983-1985, when I began getting creative illustration assignments for advertising design and editorial clients. Stylistically, I was initially influenced by painters of the 1920's and 1930's, but then spent the later 1980's incorporating other influences and a contemporary sensibility. I did my first book cover painting in 1987, and have loved those commissions ever since.

Like Water for Chocolate

『Like Water for Chocolate (Laura Esquivel, Anchor Books)』

I would like to hear your work process, especially, how you visualize the text in the case of illustration for book cover.

I'm always eager to read the manuscript of a novel and discover the cover's potential. I read and underline any words, phrases, and passages that intrigue me, paying particular attention to the themes, tone, atmosphere, and main characters that emerge. I freely take notes, draw symbolic clues, and do thumbnail ideas on sketch paper as I read. I have an affinity for natural and timeless elements. Emotion and gesture. When I'm done reading, I use this informal collection of words and visuals to work on more developed sketch ideas by combining elements in different ways, sometimes doing research or finding drawing reference. I usually develop 1-3 sketches to submit to the art director for her/his input. When the direction is finalized, I might obtain further reference, take photos, or use a model to develop the final drawing. I often do a small study in paint, which is really enjoyable as I loosely experiment with the most effective use of color and contrast. Sometimes I scan the work and experiment in Photoshop.

Please explain about the works, Like Water for Chocolate and One Hundred Years Solitude.

I consider my painting for the book One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as one of my most creative pieces and a progression in my approach to illustration. Of course, having one of the world's great contemporary novels for inspiration spurred things along a bit! That, and the magical realism of Garcia Marquez couldn't help but leave an impact on me. The book was one in a series of cover commissioned for the author's early works - works that were considerably more serious and pondering than his later novels. This novel is very complex story of generations of the Buendia family. I decided I needed to find a way to convey that density simply and metaphorically. My focus was on the passage of time and the role of dreaming that leads to realization for the family's main character, Jose Arcadio Buendia. This work prompted me to develop a character figure that was a little less classically inspired with a more universal appeal. I also changed my color palette and further simplified my imagery. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel is a novel that uses the theme of cooking and recipes to tell a tale of life and passion. The format is unique, the story is charming, and the characters are emotionally dramatic. The cover image needed to work with the theme. My first sketches focused on the main character, a young, beautiful woman named Tita. She acts out her feelings with cooking food that has magical effects on those who dine on it. Emotions become high, to the point of embarrassment, so my approach was to play off the drama in a witty way, featuring Tita cooking with a deluge of tears. Those sketches were rejected, and a new direction was established by the publisher that featured the generational aspect of the story, showing a woman and a young girl making tortillas in a traditional way. Using a lively Mexican kitchen and ingredients as the setting, I showed the love-struck woman being observed by the girl.
