Jonathan Corum

Could you tell us about your work process? Is it data-driven or more of a visual design process?

I always try to understand the design problemfirst, and then try to find the simplest solution. Understanding the problem might require learning about an unfamiliar topic, or searching through data to try to find patterns, or looking at existing charts and trying to redesign them. At the beginning of a project I might not know if the final graphic will be a chart, annotation, illustration or data visualization, but when I figure out what I’m trying to explain then I try to present

that information as clearly and simply as possible.

With the New York Times, do you get to choose which articles will get the info-graphic treatment or is it more of a editorial meeting decision?

Most of my work for the New York Times is for their Science section. That section is published once a week, so I usually have several days to decide which articles need graphics, talk to a reporter or scientist about the topics, and then design and build the graphics. But when there is breaking news those plans can change quickly, and for very big stories the graphics desk will get together and work as a group to respond to the news.

With the iPad and interactive interface applications providing multiple layers of information how do you keep your graphics work on the New York Times current or with the zeitgeist?

Most of my work is originally designed for print, but every graphic that runs in the newspaper also appears online, either as a static or interactive graphic.

On the technical side, the New York Times used to build interactive graphics using Flash, but because the iPad does not support that technology we recently switched to more open technologies that work better on mobile devices. It can be tempting to overwhelm readers with information, so for interactives we try to have the surface presentation make sense for readers who are in a hurry, and then build in deeper interaction for readers who have more time to spend with the interactive.

On the design side, I do try to keep aware of the zeitgeist, but I am probably more conservative than many other designers. Some current trends involve elaborate data visualizations, but often the final visualization looks beautiful but doesn’t explain very much. So for me, unless a new technology or design technique really helps me explain information to readers, I will often avoid it.

Information design has changed alot over the years from maps, charts to coding, programming to a mix of everything! As a designer who’s experienced a good chunk of this change, how do you see the future for design, designers of information?

Yes, it’s amazing how many different types of tools there are now. The important thing for current and future information designers to keep in mind is that software and technology are just tools, and should not substitute for ideas. A simple, interesting idea can be much more powerful than a complicated piece of software.

What takes precedent in your work, clarity or accuracy?

Accuracy is the most important thing in my work. Clarity and beauty are always goals, but information designers must never increase clarity or beauty by introducing errors.
